Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most prestigious wine regions in France’s southern Rhône Valley, located between Avignon and Orange. Its name, meaning “the Pope’s new castle,” dates back to the 14th century when the papacy was based in Avignon and vineyards were planted to supply the papal court. The region is famous for its diverse soils—most notably the large sun-baked “galets roulés” (rounded stones) that store heat and help ripen grapes. Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows up to 13 traditional grape varieties, with Grenache usually at the core, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and others. The Mediterranean climate, marked by abundant sunshine and the cooling mistral wind, produces bold, complex reds known for their ripe fruit, spice, and earthy depth, as well as smaller amounts of expressive, full-bodied whites.
